The African Union First Colored Methodist Protestant Church and Connection is the oldest independent black denomination in the U.S. and was chartered by Rev. Peter Spencer.

While the church existed already, conducting services in peoples homes, it was able to build a permanent home in Stapleton in 1849 as seen in the land deed (image below). The UAME church in Stapleton was the focus of the mob during the Civil War Draft Riots, and received life saving aid from another African American church, the First Presbyterian Church, located near by.
