The older brother of famous essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Emerson Jr. lived on Staten Island in a house called the Snuggery just off Douglass Road. It is for William that Emerson Hill on Staten Island is named.

William served as County Court judge from 1841-44. His brother Ralph was a frequent visitor, and Henry David Thoreau stayed at his home and tutored his children in 1843.
