After the Revolutionary War, Staten Islanders who demonstrated their loyalty to the British crown obtained certificates, such as the one pictured above, to board the ship Ann bound for Port Roseway, Nova Scotia. They left from Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island. However, it soon became apparent that life would be difficult in Nova Scotia based on the extreme racism they faced there.
